Unveiling the Mysteries of the Rite

Here, we aim to provide clarity on the most common inquiries regarding our tradition, its practices, and its place within the broader Masonic world. We believe that transparency and understanding are fundamental to the seeker's path.

Freemasonry is a centuries-old, worldwide fraternal organization best described as a system of moral, philosophical, and spiritual development taught through the use of allegories, symbols, and ritual dramas. It uses a builder's allegory—the construction of King Solomon's Temple—to represent the individual's lifelong work of building their inner 'character temple' based on the cardinal virtues of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

This question has two answers, depending on the context: In Symbolic (Craft) Masonry: The highest and most important degree is always that of Master Mason (3°). This degree is the essential foundation and prerequisite for all further Masonic education. No subsequent degree supersedes its importance. In Appendant Bodies: Various Masonic Rites offer further degrees that elaborate on the lessons of the first three. In the Scottish Rite, the highest conferred degree is the 32° (Master of the Royal Secret), with the 33° being an honorary distinction. In our tradition, the Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis-Misraim, the journey of philosophical and esoteric exploration continues through a system of 99 degrees.

This is a fundamental distinction.
Regular Freemasonry (Anglo-American): This tradition, led by the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) and its affiliated grand lodges worldwide, adheres to a specific set of "Landmarks" or ancient rules. Its primary characteristics include:
- Exclusively Male Membership: Membership is restricted to men.
- A Requirement of Theism: Candidates must profess a belief in a Supreme Being (often called the "Great Architect of the Universe").
- The Volume of Sacred Law: The Bible, or other appropriate sacred text, is open on the altar during workings.
- Apolitical & Non-religious: Lodges abstain from political and religious discussions.
- Focus: A strong emphasis on fraternity, charity, and moral lessons through the three Blue Lodge degrees.

Continental Freemasonry (Liberal/Progressive): This tradition, prevalent in much of Europe and Latin America, has a more flexible philosophical approach. Its characteristics often include:
- Inclusive Membership: Many bodies, including the S.A.S.M.M. USA, welcome both men and women into full membership.
- A Focus on Philosophical Liberty: It emphasizes absolute freedom of conscience. While often spiritually focused, it may welcome agnostics or deists who seek philosophical truth.
- Engagement with Ideas: Lodges may explore philosophical, social, and spiritual concepts in depth.
- Esoteric Exploration: There is a stronger emphasis on the mystical, symbolic, and esoteric (hidden) aspects of Masonic teachings.
- Extended Degree Systems: Often features high-degree systems (like our 99 degrees) that delve deeply into Hermetic, Kabbalistic, and other Western esoteric traditions.

The S.A.S.M.M. USA operates firmly within the Continental Freemasonry tradition.

We welcome all sincere seekers, both men and women, who are of lawful age and of high moral character. A genuine desire for personal growth, philosophical exploration, and spiritual development is the primary qualification. While prior Masonic membership is beneficial, it is not always a strict requirement for beginning the path in our Rite.

It is highly recommended, as the degrees of the Ancient and Primitive Rite build directly upon the foundation laid in the Symbolic Lodge (1°-3°). However, our Rite is "autonomous," meaning we can confer the first three degrees ourselves. A candidate without prior Masonic experience would begin their journey as an Entered Apprentice within our tradition.

Our system is structured into three overarching classes:
1. Symbolic Masonry (1°-3°): The foundational degrees of Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason.
2. Philosophical Masonry (4°-33°): Degrees that expand upon the Blue Lodge, exploring ethical, philosophical, and historical lessons in greater depth.
3. Hermetic and Esoteric Masonry (34°-99°): The highest degrees, which are deeply mystical and focus on the practical application of advanced esoteric principles, including Alchemy, Kabbalah, and theurgy (divine magic).

Progression through these degrees represents a commitment to intense study and inner alchemical work.

No, absolutely not. We are a philosophical and initiatic society. We do not provide a path to salvation, have a dogma, or practice worship. We use spiritual and religious symbols from various traditions as universal allegorical tools to teach philosophical truths about the human condition and the cosmos. We require respect for all positive spiritual traditions but mandate adherence to none.

We are a sovereign body governed by our own Supreme Council, which holds authority over the Rite within our jurisdiction. We maintain formal treaties of amity and recognition with other sovereign bodies within the Continental tradition, most notably the International Sovereign Sanctuary in Milan, Italy, and the Mother Grand Lodge C.A.M.E.A. in Italy. This ensures the legitimacy and continuity of our initiatic lineage.

The goal is the perfection of the individual—what we call the 'Building of the Interior Temple.' It is the process of synthesizing knowledge, virtue, and spiritual awareness to achieve enlightened consciousness and purposeful living. The degrees are a map for this journey of self-transformation.

Membership is a commitment to applying Masonic principles outside the lodge room. The lessons of the degrees—patience, integrity, tolerance, and dedication—are designed to be practiced in one's family, profession, and community. It is a call to be a builder of a better world, starting with oneself.

While our primary focus is on the philosophical and spiritual development of our members, the Masonic virtue of Relief (charity) is fundamental. Our charitable efforts are often directed toward causes that align with our values, such as supporting education, freedom of thought, and esoteric research, though they are typically less publicized than those of mainstream Masonic bodies.
